I was looking for a new desktop to use at work. I looked at a very wide range of options. I'd been given a price range and thought that my best bet would be to build my own system. I priced out components for hours but couldn't put something together that came even close in price. I ended up buying this system for well under my budget but getting pretty much all I wanted.
The first thing I did was replace the OS with Linux. (Fedora 12 to be specific.) It was a perfect fit and everything has worked great. Anyone looking for a Linux desktop machine, this is a good choice. All my hardware has worked without issue.
I run Windows 7 on another Acer system and it's been great, so I don't doubt this would be a fantastic system with the stock OS left in place.
The system itself looks fantastic. It is very compact and I welcomed all the space I gained when I got rid of the huge desktop machine that I replaced. It is incredibly quiet as well. I've had co-workers come by my cube and put their head right next to it, trying to tell if they can even hear the fan. The office isn't the most quiet environment, but I don't mind not adding to the noise.
The doors over the optical drive and front ports are a nice touch. The front ports include 5 usb, firewire, mic, headphone jack and card readers. Nothing exceptional, but not lacking in any way I can see either. The rear ports include hdmi as well as an optical s/pdif port. This machine is small enough and quiet enough that it might make for a decent entertainment center. The large hard drive doesn't hurt in this regard either.
I have one small negative. There are expansion slots but the case is very narrow. The most obvious use for one of the slots would be for a graphics card. I'm thinking it could be tough to find one that will fit this case. If a card that will fit is found, it had better have extremely small power demands due to the 220 watt power supply. One would probably be most realistic going into this as a system that isn't going to see much in the way of hardware upgrades. Maybe RAM, though putting more memory in means taking some out since all slots are filled getting to 6 gig.
I'm using this as a work machine for development and creating training materials, primarily screen casts. It's handled everything I've thrown at it very well and I'm extremely happy with this purchase. Acer has made me very happy again with a very capable yet very economical machine. They've been winning me over in a big way recently.

I bought this exact computer from a local store (CompUSA), and wish I had saved myself the sales tax and bought it from Amazon. This thing is loaded! You cannot build a computer with these specs for this price -- I looked! And it is so quiet I have to look at it in the morning to see if it is on, or if I had shut it down the previous night.
I am a computer tech, so I hesitated to buy this when I knew I could build my own. As I said, I couldn't build one like this for less money. And if you have not experienced Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, it is FAST (with these specs)! If you do not need a monitor, this is a GREAT buy at $559, while that price lasts.
